In our recent Advent celebrations we remembered the arrival of the Son, the one the angels proclaimed as the promised ever-reigning king; we also looked forward to his return, the day when he will inaugurate his kingdom of peace, until then however, we are in a battle. Christ has secured the victory, he is reigning, but we are not yet free from the temptations of ‘the world, the flesh and the devil.’ The New Testament often describes the Christian life in military terms, our verse for 2025 is a case in point as it urges us to be alert and courageous, standing firm in faith, strengthened by the Spirit, yet governed by Christ echoing love. How are we to live as believers in 2025? We need look no further than 1 Corinthians 16:13-14.
