We began our songs for the summer series contemplating the lament of Psalm 13.
We discovered this was the cry, call and confidence of our Saviour, who was forsaken, defeated and tasted death for us, in order that we might have the assurance of the Father’s embrace, a share in Jesus’ ultimate victory, and life secured in him. The God of ‘unfailing love’ serves to save. This week we explore Jesus’ call for his followers to love in the same way. He turns worldly values on their head when he teaches ‘anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all. ‘Discipleship is not the call to influence, but Christ echoing self-giving, to the service of all, including the last and the least. As the Christian community loves in this way, so the beauty of the God of covenant love is displayed. In our other services we open Psalm 1, the way of wisdom, to discover vitality is not found in walking our own way, but under the refuge of the blessed man, Jesus himself.
