| Graveyard DatabaseThe
first burial in Barnston's graveyard took place in 1871, the year the
Church itself was consecrated. Prior to this date, Anglican funerals
from this area usually took place at Holy Cross Woodchurch, the mother
parish from which Barnston was subdivided. The Churchyard has now been
closed, although burials of cremated remains still take place and
existing graves can sometimes be re-opened for an additional burial.
A
detailed computer database of interments has been compiled, using old
records and checked by physical inspection of the graves. Basic
information from the database is available as an Excel spreadsheet
which you can download by clicking the link below. In the parish office
we have a more extensive database which also includes details of
inscriptions on monuments, photographs of graves and other information.
Please contact us if you think we can provide further useful information.
Please
note that in some cases it
may not be possible to trace the location of remains in the graveyard.
For example, in earlier times, the burial of stillborn infants or of
cremated
remains often went unrecorded.

of the headings in the table are self-explanatory. The Register number
refers to the series of ledgers in which burials were recorded as they
occurred. Burials are numbered consecutively through each register. For
the purposes of the database we have also assigned each interment a
unique ID. Dates (where known) are listed in the form YYYY-MM-DD. This makes it easier to sort the records by date, when this is desired.
